Tourism Minister David Collado emphasized the sustained growth of the tourism sector and the need to continue encouraging investments in building additional hotel rooms and upgrading existing ones.

“This is why I am publicly announcing here today that Confotur (Law 158-01, the Incentive for Tourism Development) will continue strongly”

Collado declared, reaffirming that the Tourism Cabinet has always prioritized private investment as a cornerstone for industry growth.

The minister highlighted that the country needs approximately 30,000 additional hotel rooms to meet the rapid expansion of the industry in recent years.

“We firmly believe in encouraging private sector investments to develop new hotels and introduce new brands to the market”

David Collado stated during the Asonahores Tourism Investment Forum.

Collado also guaranteed that Law 158-01 would remain in place to support the ongoing renovation of hotel accommodations, a critical factor in maintaining the Dominican Republic’s competitive and prominent position in the global tourism industry.

Private Sector Investment: A Key to Sustained Growth

The minister clarified that even amidst discussions surrounding the Fiscal Modernization Project, the Tourism Cabinet never considered eliminating Confotur.

“The Tourism Cabinet had a plan, and under no circumstances would investments have been left uncertain. Eliminating the incentives for creating new hotel rooms was never on the table”

Collado firmly stated

This commitment to fostering tourism and private sector collaboration underscores the Dominican Republic’s dedication to becoming a top global destination for travelers and investors alike.

Collado highlighted the “frank and direct” dialogue maintained with investors, underscoring the importance of continuous meetings to ensure their input is considered when making key decisions. He emphasized that the remarkable development of Dominican tourism has largely been the result of a successful public-private collaboration.

The minister reaffirmed that Dominican tourism is “at its peak” and assured that this momentum will not slow down. Projections for the end of 2024 estimate a record-breaking 11.5 million visitors, surpassing the impressive 10 million milestone achieved last year.
