The Eco-Bahia Foundation and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources have signed a collaboration agreement for the protection and conservation of sea turtles inhabiting tropical seas and currently facing the threat of extinction.

Through this initiative, the Eco-Bahia Foundation is joining the Sea Turtle Conservation Program executed by the Ministry of Environment in the province of Samaná, as well as at Playa Nueva Romana, Playa Boca del Soco, the beach near Caño Patricio located in the province of San Pedro de Macorís, and at Playa Arena Gorda, the latter being in Macao within the province of La Altagracia.

Species such as the green turtle, leatherback turtle, and hawksbill turtle use the Dominican beaches for nesting. Additionally, the loggerhead turtle, which migrates through the Dominican Republic, is a vital part of the nation’s biological richness and natural heritage. In this regard, Alex Matás, the director of the Eco-Bahia Foundation in the Dominican Republic, stated, “Ensuring the survival of sea turtles and protecting biodiversity at large is a shared responsibility. We must solidify a sustainable future for these emblematic creatures that frequent our seas and beaches. The Eco-Bahia Foundation is pleased to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment in this important endeavor.”

Some of the most significant actions to be carried out as a result of this collaboration agreement include maintaining an updated record of turtle nesting on the aforementioned beaches, monitoring coastal protection efforts, supporting reforestation with coastal endemic or native species, organizing training sessions for technicians and program leaders in the country’s turtle program, and engaging the community in turtle conservation activities in the provinces of Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Altagracia.
